There is a house in the birches, and it is impossible to look away from it.
A boldly striped red and green house sits at the center of a white birch grove, its roof peaked and detailed, a circular window hand-rendered at the top, and a front door so carefully constructed it feels like a tiny artwork within the painting. Behind the house, warm orange and gold light radiates outward through the trees in great glowing swirls, and a crescent moon keeps quiet watch from the upper corner. Wildflowers bloom in the grass below.

Barbara has always thought of this painting as her answer to quilting — and once you see it, you'll understand exactly what she means. A cheerful white farmhouse sits nestled in rolling green hills, flanked by trees in orange, purple, and red. Below it, the land is divided into a glorious patchwork of garden plots, each one its own pattern and color — plaid, dotted, striped, floral — just like the squares of a beloved quilt. Sheep graze through the patches, cows wander the far corner, and one small chicken strolls through the middle of it all as if she owns the place.

Fraz has opinions, and he'd like you to know it. This tall, spotted cat stares out from a deep, dotted night sky with those remarkable green eyes and the most extraordinary set of zigzag whiskers you've ever seen — every one of them hand-dotted in magenta and purple. He's covered in dots of orange, red, and yellow, each one placed by hand, and the whole thing comes together into something that's hard to look away from.

A great grey owl perches in the spreading branches of a night tree, his golden eyes wide open and watching, while below him a cheerful little house glows warm against a starlit sky. Red tulips bloom in the foreground, green trees dot the rolling hills, and a crescent moon hangs over the whole scene like a quiet blessing. At the center of the front door — a heart.
Home was one of Barbara's early mixed media pieces, and it announced something important about where her work was headed. Built from layers of collage, paint, and paper, it has the depth and texture of something you want to lean in close to examine — and the warmth of something you want to hang somewhere you'll see it every day. It went on to win Best of Show at the Euclid Arts Association Show in Euclid, Ohio, and it has been turning heads ever since.

This is one of Barbara's most celebrated pieces — and it's easy to see why. Three dark green houses nestle quietly among a grove of white birch trees, their bare branches threading through a sky built entirely from torn and stitched handmade paper in fiery oranges, pinks, and golds. The ground beneath them ripples in deep navy and blue, anchoring the whole luminous scene.
Houses in a Grove of Birch was created using Barbara's handmade paper technique — layers of torn paper, collage, and hand-stitching assembled into a composition that is as tactile as it is beautiful. It went on to win Best of Show at the Glen Arbor Art Center's Made of Paper Juried Exhibition, and earned the Readers' Choice Award in the Made in Michigan Art Contest sponsored by the Grosse Pointe News. Two of the most meaningful recognitions Barbara has received, and two that feel completely right for this piece.

Whether you've never picked up a brush or you just need an excuse to get creative, Artzmaker Studio classes are relaxed, fun, and open to all skill levels.
Art Therapy Sessions are different from a class or workshop. Here, making art is still at the center of every session — but the direction of our time together is guided by something personal to you.
As a Board Certified Art Therapist with over thirty years of experience in medical settings and private practice, Barbara has walked alongside clients through some of life's most challenging and most celebratory moments. Art therapy isn't about making a pretty picture. It's about using the creative process as a pathway to wellness, self-understanding, and healing.
Barbara has worked with clients navigating chronic pain, grief, depression, anxiety, fear, eating disorders, aging, loss of a loved one or pet, self-esteem, coping with illness, emotional well-being, relaxation, and overall wellness. She also brings extensive experience supporting individuals and families affected by addiction through 12-step programs.
You don't need to know what you want to work on when you arrive. You just need to be willing to show up. The art will help with the rest.

A visual journal is part art, part diary, part dream board — and entirely your own. In this class you'll create the first pages of an intention journal built around your personal hopes, dreams, and wishes. It's a place where images, words, textures, and color come together to tell the story of what matters most to you right now.
We begin by identifying four to six intentions — your own words, your own hopes. If you're not sure where to start, Barbara will help you find them. Words like transform, explore, courage, freedom, gratitude, and play have a way of unlocking things you didn't know were waiting.
From there the page becomes yours. Collage, watercolor, acrylic paint, rubber stamps, fabric, thread, handmade paper, photographs, magazine images, embellishments — everything you need is here. You're also encouraged to bring your own photos, personal words, or anything meaningful you'd like to include. The more personal, the more powerful.
You will leave with the beginning of something you'll want to keep coming back to.
What to bring: A blank mixed media sketchbook in a size that feels right to you. An old children's board book or blank board book also works beautifully — Barbara can source one if needed.

Have you always wanted to try making art but talked yourself out of it? Told yourself you'd embarrass yourself, that you can't draw a straight line, that doodling doesn't count? This class is for you.
It all begins with a large piece of paper, a light oil base crayon, and one wild and crazy scribble on that feared blank page. From those messy lines something will appear — something that is entirely and uniquely yours. You just never know where a scribble will lead. But what I can promise you is that for the duration of our time together you will be loosening up, going with the flow, laughing, playing with art materials, and tapping into your own creative imagination.
All you need is a desire to play, learn, and create. Everything else is provided.

You've done it before — doodling on a notepad while waiting on hold, sketching little patterns in the margins of a notebook. Turns out, that instinct was onto something.
Zendoodling is the art of creating beautiful images through simple lines and repetitive patterns. No experience needed, no plan required — just you, your pen, and a willingness to slow down for a little while. Webster's Dictionary defines a doodle as "an aimless or casual scribble, design or sketch." In this class, we take that aimlessness and turn it into something meaningful.
The focus is the process, not the product. But somewhere along the way you'll find yourself relaxing into the work, leaving the world and its problems behind, and ending up with a beautiful piece of art that is entirely your own.

This painting asks you to slow down and look — and then look again.
All Snug and Safe is a cross-section of the whole wide world. Above ground, a peaceful farm stretches across a rolling green landscape — a red barn, a tree house, sheep in the fields, a bear emerging from a rocky den, apple blossoms in bloom. Below the surface, colorful fish swim through an underwater layer teeming with leaves and light. And deeper still, underground rooms built from intricate patterns and warm earthy tones house the small creatures of the world going quietly about their lives — a child reading surrounded by bunnies and mice, a fox curled up asleep, rabbits nestled together in a round burrow, roots connecting everything from the tree above all the way down.
Barbara created this piece because she loves when people find their own stories inside her work. And All Snug and Safe has more stories in it than almost anything else in the collection. Every time you look, something new appears.
